Gaelic Team Attend Indoor Blitz in Station Centre

On Tuesday 2nd February 2016 our P6 & 7 Boy’s Gaelic Football Team did very well when representing the school in the Allianz Cumann na mBunscol, Thír Eoghain, Gaelic Football heats, held in the Station Centre.

Ten schools were drawn into two sections. Section ‘A’ contained St. Patrick’s P.S. Newtownstewart; St. Patrick’s P.S. Eskra; St. Teresa’s P.S. Loughmacrory; Our Lady of Lourdes P.S. Greencastle and Gaelscoil na gCrann.

All teams played well, but it was a well organised Loughmacrory team who qualified for the final from this heat, winning all four of their group games.

Section ‘B’ comprised of ourselves; Christ The King P.S. Strathroy; Gaelscoil Uí Dhochartaigh, Strabane and St. Caireall’s P.S. Aghyaran.

Our school team produced some terrific football, winning 3 out of the 4 matches comfortably, however, it was due to a slow start in our first game against Trillick that cost us. We were a little slow in getting into our rhythm and unfortunately we lost a closely fought contest 3-2, which meant we had to win our remaining games to stand any chance of making it through to the final.

In our remaining matches we played some fantastic football, with Tiernan and Jack doing the bulk of the scoring for our team from midfield, but with Conan also chipping in with a few valuable scores from his position upfront. Equally important in defence were Theo, Thomas, Sean and Cahir who all produced some excellent tackling and blocking, not to mention some magnificent goalkeeping by Oisin, to help us win our remaining matches comfortably. Unfortunately, Trillick also won all of their remaining matches and so they made it through to the final against Loughmacrory.

The final turned out to be an excellent encounter between two strong and physical teams from St. Scire’s P.S. Trillick and St. Teresa’s P.S. Loughmacrory.A 7-goal thriller ensued, with the teams level on three separate occasions in an absolute belter of a final. At 3-3, with only a minute remaining, it appeared that extra-time would be required. However, a last-gasp winner was scored to seal victory for the Loughmacrory lads and it is they who now qualify for the county final in Cookstown. We wish St. Teresa’s P.S. all the very best!
