McDonald's Sixes Soccer Tournaments Finalists

26th May 2019

Our P6/7 soccer team came agonisingly close to winning the McDonald's Sixes Soccer Tournament for the first time, when they battled hard for a nil-nil draw in normal time and again in extra time, before finally losing out in a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

The boys performed brilliantly through-out the tournament with wins against McClintock PS, Holy Family PS and Christ the King PS and draws against Gibson PS, St Mary's PS Killyclogher and St Conor's PS to finish the qualifying round in joint 1st position with St Conor's.

This resulted in a quarter final match with McClintock PS which our boys managed to win 1-0 with a superbly taken goal by Sean McCusker, putting us through to the semi-final against Christ the King, who had managed to win their semi final against Gibson PS on penalties.

Another 1-0 victory against Christ the King, with a sweetly taken penalty slotted away by Shea O'Donnell, put us through to the final against St Conor's, who had managed to defeat St Mary's on penalties in the other semi-final.

The final turned out to be a cagey affair, with neither team conceding in normal time. St Conor's did manage to get the ball in the back of our net twice, but both goals were ruled out due to players scoring from inside the box. We managed to hold on in extra time which meant the game would have to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. With our goal keeper in brilliant form throughout the tournament, we were quietly confident but unfortunately their much taller keeper proved to be the difference, with only two of our players able to beat him and thus we lost out 4-2.

Nonetheless, we had a brilliant day and as well as coming away with our runner up medals, Cahir, our goal-keeper came away with a much deserved goal-keeper of the tournament award, Oran Barrett came away with male player of the tournament award and last but not least Shea O'Donnell secured a place on the All-Star team of the tournament.

A fantastic day had which was kindly sponsored by McDonald's and organised by Paddy McMahon & Co at Omagh's Station Centre.

A big thank-you must go to all the players and organisers for helping to make it such an amazing day of football and fun!
